Asnaf e Urdu Adab - Class 9 NCERT / CBSE

Urdu adab mein shaayari aur kahaniyon ke jo alag-alag roop hain, unhein hi Asnaf kehte hain. Har ek ki apni pehchan hai, apni banaawat hai, aur apna apna mizaaj. Class 9 ke syllabus mein aap in chhe asnaf se waqif honge: Ghazal, Nazm, Dastan, Marsia, Qasida, aur Rubai. Har asnaf ke apne qaide hain, apni misaalein hain — aur yahi cheezein milkar Urdu adab ko itna ameer banati hain.

Yeh asnaf kyun important hain?

  • In Urdu, jab aap shaayari aur nasr ki gehrai mein jaate hain, toh yeh asnaf samajhna ek darwaza kholta hai. Matlab, agar aap sirf lafzon ko parh kar chhod dein, toh aadha maza kho jaata hai. Yeh asnaf aapko bataate hain ke kahaan ghazal ka rang chadhta hai, kahaan nazm ki chaal badalti hai, aur kahaan nasr mein bayaan ki tez dharr chhupi hoti hai. Aur seedhi baat, jab yeh samajh aata hai, toh parhna aur sunna dono apna alag hi lutf deta hai. Waise bhi, Urdu ki rooh inhi asnaf ke andar basti hai, aur inhein pehchanna ek umda shaair ya likhne waale ki pehli seedhi hai.
  • Simple as that—every genre carries its own weight, its own flavor, its own reason for being. You can’t just swap one for another and expect the same punch.
  • Yeh asnaf kyun important hain? [PARA] CBSE exams mein inka gyaan zaroori hota hai—par sirf itna hi nahi. Asal mein, yeh categories tumhe cheezein sort karne ka tareeqa dete hain, jaise ki kab koi cheez ek group mein aati hai aur kab doosri mein. Bina inke, toh samajhna mushkil ho jaata hai. Thoda technical lagta hai? Haan, thoda sa. Lekin exam mein poochha jaata hai—direct ya indirectly—aur agar aapne inhe ache se pakda, toh numbers bhi ache aate hain. Ek baar pattern samajh lo, baaki sab easy lagta hai.

Asnaf e Urdu Adab ki Tafseel

Urdu adab mein asnaf ko bunyadi taur par do hisson mein taqseem kiya gaya hai — Shaayari aur Nasr. Shaayari ke andar Ghazal, Nazm, Rubai, Qasida, aur Marsia jaise naqsh-e-pa aate hain. Nasr ki taraf dekhein to Dastan, Afsaana, aur Dramah milte hain, waqai yeh dono dhaarein apni jagah bahut gehraai rakhti hain. Lekin Class 9 mein sab kuch nahi chhoda gaya, sirf kuch khaas asnaf par zor diya gaya hai. To chaliye, aaj hum unhi ki baat karte hain.

1. Ghazal

Ghazal is hands down the most famous form of Urdu poetry, no contest there. You've got at least two couplets, or ashtaar, and here's the kicker—each one stands completely on its own, like a tiny self-contained world. The first couplet sets the rules: both lines match in meter and rhyme. Then, every couplet that follows has to echo that same qaafiya and radeef in its second line, like a musical refrain you can't shake. When it comes to themes, you're usually wading through love, longing, separation, or that raw emotional grit that keeps you going. And if you're naming the greats, you can't skip Mirza Ghalib, Allama Iqbal, or Faiz Ahmed Faiz—those names are basically scripture.

  • Radeef, qaafiya, beher—teeno ki pakki pabandi. Yehi iski asal pehchaan hai.
  • Honestly, you can't talk about the ghazal without bringing up Ghalib. Take this sher: "Dil hi to hai na sang-o-khisht, dard se bhar na aaye kyun." It's a masterclass in emotional restraint and vulnerability, all packed into two lines. The heart isn't made of stone or brick. Why wouldn't it fill up with pain? That's the whole trick right there—he's not just describing sorrow, he's questioning the very logic of it, and you feel that ache instantly. Pure genius, really.

2. Nazm

Nazm shaayari ki woh soorat hai jahan ek hi mazmoon ya kahaani ko aage peechhe — bilkul musalsal — baandha jaata hai. Har sher doosre se juda hota hai, aur poora kalaam ek hi soch ke gird ghoomta hai. Wazan aur qaafiya donon maujood hain, lekin Ghazal ki tarah yahan radeef ki zimmedari nahi hoti — thodi si azaadi mil jaati hai. Aur haan, Nazm kisi waqia, siyasi masle, ya samaji uljhan par bhi likhi ja sakti hai, koi rok nahi.

Khasoosiyat? It’s about expansion, really—spreading an image out, stretching it till it breathes. You lean on tashbih, you lean on istiaar, and you let both do the heavy lifting. That’s where the magic sits.Allama Iqbal’s 'Shikwa' and 'Jawab-e-Shikwa' are the two big names here, no contest. Honestly, you can’t talk about nazm without them. They’re the heavyweights, the ones everyone knows, and they still hit hard today.

3. Dastan

Dastan Urdu nasr ka sab se purana aur sab se dilchasp asnaf hai — aur iski apni hi alag duniya hai. Ye lambi kahani hoti hai, itni lambi ke aap isme kho jayein. Isme jasoosi, jung, ajooba, aur romaan sab kuch mila hua hota hai. Ajeeb-o-ghareeb waqiye, jaadui tarkeebein, aise kirdar jo aapko yakeen nahi hote ke sach hain — lekin aap phir bhi unke saath chalte jaate hain. Aur iska apna ek khaas andaaz-e-bayan hai, jo isay baaki asnaaf se alag karta hai. 'Dastan-e-Amir Hamza' iski misaal hai — aur kya misaal hai. Jo log dastan padhte hain, wo sirf kahani nahi padhte, wo ek poora jahan apne aankhon ke saamne khulte dekhte hain.

  • Yeah, so this one's a real marathon. We're talking stories that stretch on and on, just like Alif Laila—no quick wrap-ups here, you settle in for the long haul.
  • Class 9 mein Dastan ka ek hissa padhaya jata hai.

4. Marsia

Marsia is that kind of poetry which is written on sorrow, grief, or any tragic event, especially the martyrdom of Imam Husain (RA) and Karbala. It involves crying, lamentation, soz-o-gudaaz, and the act of eulogy. The verses of Marsia are weighty and long.

  • 4. Marsia [PARA] Khasoosiyat: Soz, aah-o-zaari, aur waqiat ka tafseeli bayan. Wait, that’s already the heading’s line. The para line here is just that one sentence—so I’ll rewrite it as a rough, human-like fragment. Soz and aah-o-zaari—that’s the core, the weeping and wailing. Then the detailed telling of events, the waqiat ka tafseeli bayan—you get the full story, slow and heavy. Not just facts, but the weight behind them. That’s what makes a marsia hit hard.
  • Mir Anis and Dabir — those are the two big names when it comes to mashoor Marsia. No real debate there.

5. Qasida

Qasida ek aisi shaayari hai jo kisi badshah, kisi buzurg, ya phir kisi khaas shakhs ki taarif ke liye likhi jaati hai—aur iska apna ek alag mizaaj hai, bilkul juda. Aakhir mein ek maqta aata hai, jahan us shakhs ka naam zikr hota hai. Ye lambi hoti hai, aur isme qaafiya aur wazn ka poora khayal rakhna padta hai. Haan, yeh koi aasan kaam nahi.

Khasoosiyat ke tor par ismein madah, tashbih, aur mubalagha ka khoob istemaal hota hai. Yeh teeno cheezein mil kar isay aik alag hi rang deti hain. Madah se shair apne mehboob ya mauzo ki tareef karta hai, tashbih se cheezon ko khubsurat andaz mein pesh karta hai, aur phir mubalagha. Uski apni duniya hai, jahan haqeeqat ko barhaya jaata hai taake asar zyada ho. Isliye is qasida ka andaz itna jazbati aur pur-asar hota hai. Zauq aur Ghalib—dono ne bhi Qasida likhe hain, aur yeh koi chhoti baat nahi. Urdu mein inke naamon ke baghair Qasida ki riwayat adhoori hai. Ghalib ka naam sunte hi ghazal yaad aati hai, lekin haqeeqat yeh hai ke unke qalam se Qasida bhi nikle hain. Zauq ka toh yeh khaas meyaar tha hi. Dono ke kaam mein Qasida ki shakal aur uski rawani alag hai, lekin dono ne is sinf ko apne andaaz mein zinda rakha.

6. Rubai

Rubai is basically a short form of poetry—just four lines, that's it. But don't let the size fool you. Each rubai carries a complete thought, a full idea wrapped up neat and tidy. It's got its own specific meter, too. The first, second, and fourth lines share the rhyme, while the third one breaks away, almost like it's marching to a different beat. That little twist keeps things interesting. And what's inside? Life's raw truths, deep contemplation, bits of wisdom you can actually chew on. You'll find all of that packed into those four lines.

  • Chhoti, tez, aur dimaag ko jhanjhodne wali—bas yahi iski khaas baat hai. Koi lambi-chaudi baatein nahi, seedha sawaal, seedha vaar. Sochna padta hai, aur thoda zyada hi padta hai.
  • Omer Khayyam ki Farsi rubaiyat ka Urdu tarjuma—yehi hai Mashoor Rubai.

Class 9 Exam Mein Kya Aata Hai?

Class 9 Exam Mein Kya Aata Hai? [PARA] NCERT ki kitab mein in asnaf ki definition, khasoosiyat aur misaalein di gayi hoti hain. Aam taur par poochta hai: kitab ka har chapter – uske definitions, examples, even the footnotes – seedha exam mein aa sakta hai. Par poochta kya hai? Usually wohi sawaal jo NCERT ke andar hi chhupa hai.

  • Class 9 ke exam mein sabse pehle aata hai har asnaf ki paribhasha. Haan, wahi definitions jo aapko rattni padti hain—unka seedha-sa sawaal aata hai. Koi ghumao nahi, koi tricky wording nahi, bas jo book mein likha hai wahi pooch lete hain.
  • Honestly, kamaal ke 2-3 poets ya writers ke naam hi kaafi hain.
  • Ghazal aur Nazm mein farq samajhna ho toh seedhi baat hai — dono alag cheezein hain. Ghazal mein har sher ka apna ek alag mazmoon hota hai, jaise har sher ek nayi duniya khol deta hai. Lekin Nazm mein poora flow ek hi rahta hai, ek hi vichar aage badhta hai jaise ek kahani kehti jaaye. Aur Ghazal ka apna woh khaas radif-qafiya hota hai jo usko pehchaan deta hai, jabki Nazm mein aisi koi zabardasti nahi hoti. Waise, Ghazal mein ashaar ka woh rawaan hona bhi zaroori hai. Matla, maqta, sab apni jagah par. Nazm mein toh koi aisi pabandi nahi, jo mann kare woh likho. Bas farq itna hi nahi, isko seedhe seedhe yaad rakho — Ghazal tukdon mein sochti hai, Nazm poore dil se.
  • Dastan aur Marsia ke elements—yahi toh poora khel hai. Pehle in dono ke andar jo cheezein hoti hain, unhe samajhna zaroori hai. Kahaani ka dhaanchaa, usmein jaan daalne wale jazbaat, aur woh lehja jo sunne waale ko apni taraf kheench le. Marsia mein aapko milega dard aur yaad ka ameez, jabki Dastan apni goonj aur rawani ke liye jaani jaati hai. Yaani, agar aap in elements ko pehchaan lein, toh paper mein likhna aasaan ho jaata hai—bas phir rattne ki zaroorat nahi. Bas unhe alag-alag pehchanno, aur aapka kaam ho gaya.

Urdu adab ka ye hissa sirf naam ka nahi, asal mein ye aapki zabaan aur soch dono ko khoobsurat banata hai. Is liye in asnaf ko yaad rakhne ke liye unki alag alag pehchaan ko samajhna zaroori hai, aur saath hi misaalein padhte rahiye. Bas rattne ki bajaye, har qism ko uski apni shakal mein pehchaniye. Aisi misaalein dhoondiye jo aapko asal lagti hain. Phir dekhiye, ye khud-ba-khud yaad reh jaati hain.

Agar aap Class 9 ke Urdu exam ki taiyari kar rahe hain, toh asnaf e Urdu Adab ka hissa koi aisa topic nahi hai jise aap skip kar sakein. Iske baare mein aur gehrai se samajhne ke liye apni NCERT Urdu ki kitab ko hi base banaiye. Aur haan, jo jaankari hum yahan de rahe hain, woh bilkul CBSE pattern ke hisaab se hai, toh aap is par bharosa kar sakte hain.
