Class 9 Kritika: Chapter 3 - Is Jal Pralay Mein

Kahani Ka Saransh aur Mahatva

This chapter draws from a Phanishwar Nath 'Renu' story titled 'Is Jal Pralay Mein' — a vividly visual piece of writing. It captures the survival of two people when Mumbai got hit by that monstrous downpour and flooding on 26 July 2005. At its heart, the story pushes forward themes of humanity, endurance, and the kind of togetherness that only surfaces when disaster strikes.

Is Jal Pralay Mein - Poori Kahani Ka Vistrit Vishleshan

Aur phir kya tha. Saari sadkein, railway tracks, aur colonies pani mein dub gayin. Log apne gharoon mein phans gaye, koi kahin nahin nikal sakta tha.

Kahani Ke Pramukh Themes aur Sandesh

  • Prakriti ka Pradarshan: Kahani yeh bataati hai ki insaan chahe kitna bhi aage badh jaaye, prakriti ke saamne uski ek na chalti hai.
  • Log insaniyat ko hi asal mehsoos karte hain jab waqt sakht hota hai. Us waqt koi aage badh kar haath badhata hai—bilkul us kahani ki tarah, jahan ek truck driver ne writer ki madad ki thi. Woh chhota sa kaam, bada sandesh deta hai.
  • Mumbai jaise bade sheher ki planning mein jo kamiyan hain, woh bhi is aapda ki ek bada kaaran bani. Sirf prakritik aapda nahi thi yeh. Sheher ki apni khoton ne bhi isme apna haath milaya. Planning mein kuch aisi jagah thi, jahan kami rah gayi. Aur yeh kamiyan hi aakhirkar is tabahi ki vajah bani.
  • Umeed aur Sabar: Aakhir mein, writer ke ghar waale bach jaate hain. Aur wahi toh asli paighaam hai—ki umeed kabhi nahi marni chahiye. Zindagi chahe jitni bhi uljhi ho, sabar aur bharosa insaan ko paar laga dete hain. Kahani ka yeh mod yahi batata hai ki andhere ke baad savera zaroor aata hai, chahe der se hi sahi.

Important Characters aur Unka Role

The Writer (Narrator): Wo kahani ka dil hai—har cheez ko apni nazar se dekhta hai aur apne tajurbe ko bayaan karta hai. Aur sabse khaas baat, wo aapda ke beech bhi positive rehne ki koshish karta hai, chahe haalat kitni bhi kharab kyun na ho. The Writer's Behen: Uski behen uske saath har kadam par thi. Aur dhyan do—uska character koi kamzor nahi hai. Mushkil waqt mein bhi wo himmat nahi haarti, aur yehi cheez use bahut alag banati hai. The Truck Driver: Ek bilkul anjaan aadmi. Lekin jab waqt sabse mushkil hota hai, tabhi wo aata hai aur madad karta hai. Uske character ke zariye 'insaniyat' ka asli chehra dikhaya gaya hai—koi jan-pehchan ka nahi, bas ek insaan jo doosre insaan ke kaam aata hai.

Chapter se Important Prashn Uttar ke Liye Tips

  • Honestly, this one’s a classic that trips up a lot of students. When they ask you to explain the meaning of the title “Is Jal Pralay Mein,” don’t overthink it. Break it down word by word. “Jal Pralay” literally points to a flood, a deluge, water wreaking havoc. But here’s the twist—the title isn’t just about rain and rising rivers. It’s symbolic. Think of it as a metaphor for life’s overwhelming chaos, that feeling when everything around you is drowning. The writer’s using that image of destruction to hint at something bigger, maybe emotional or social turmoil. So when you answer, make sure you touch on both layers: the literal flood and the deeper, figurative meaning. That’s what the examiner’s really looking for.
  • Mumbai ki is aapda ne sheher ke infrastructure par kya asar dala, yeh sawal aksar exam mein poocha jata hai. Aur iska jawab dene se pehle aapko yeh samajhna hoga ki aapda ne sirf sadkon aur imaraton ko hi nahi toda, balki poore sheher ki neev ko hilakar rakh diya tha. Transport theek tha, lekin paani ke system ka toh poora chakravyuh hi toot gaya tha. Bijli ke poles gir gaye, internet connections gayab ho gaye, aur hospitals mein bhi patients ke liye jagah nahi bachi thi. Toh jab aap is prashn ka uttar likhenge, toh seedha seedha yahi bolna ki "infrastructure kharab ho gaya" kaafi nahi hai. Aapko thoda detail mein jana hoga — jaise, sadkon ka kya hua, railway lines ka kya hua, aur sheher ke drainage system ka kya haal hua. Yehi woh points hain jo aapke answer ko alag banate hain. Aur haan, examples ke saath jawab likho, kyunki sirf theory se kaam nahi chalega. Exam mein examiner yeh dekhna chahta hai ki aapne aapda ke baad ke haalaat ko kitni gehrai se samjha hai, aur infrastructure par uska kaunsa hissa sabse zyada prabhavit hua. Toh aise mein, apne answer ko chhote chhote points mein todkar likhna aur har point ke saath ek chhota sa udaharan dena, yahi sabse behtar tarika hai.
  • Agar tum kahani ka ant padh kar soch rahe ho ki writer ko aakhir hua kya tha, toh ruko aur ek baar phir se us aakhri hisse ko dhyan se dekho. Wo pralay ko 'acchi' kyun keh raha hai, ye sawal apne aap mein gehrai rakhta hai. Aur shayad isi liye uski nazar mein wo 'acchi' thi.
  • Iska jawab aasan nahi hai, lekin kahani ek seedhi si baat samjhati hai—aapda prabandhan sirf taqdeer par chhodne ka naam nahi. Seekh yeh hai ki taiyari aur sujha-boojh hi aapko musibat ke waqt bacha sakti hai. Bhala, har mod par plan banana mumkin ho? Shayad nahi. Phir bhi, chhoti si planning bhi badi aafat mein kaam aa jaati hai. Kahani wahi batati hai—jo pehle se sochta hai, woh ghabrata kam hai. Aur yehi toh asli seekh hai: haath par haath rakhe baithne se kuch nahi hota, aapko khud aage badhna padta hai.

NCERT Pattern ke Important Points

Is chapter se exam mein mostly short answer type questions hi aate hain. Students ko kahani ke theme, characters ke bhaav, aur writer ki soch par dhyan dena chahiye. Title ka significance aur moral values—ye dono cheezein 1-2 marks ke liye poochhi ja sakti hain. Aur haan, real life mein aisi aapda se kaise nipatna hai, ye bhi ek important topic hai.

So here’s the thing about this story — it hits you right in the gut. Nature, honestly, is just on a whole other level of power, and no matter how hard we try to fight it, we’re not winning that one. That’s the hard truth. But what really matters is how we react when things get ugly. We hold on to each other, we don’t lose our nerve, and we keep moving forward, even when the odds are stacked against us. And honestly, for a Class 9 student, this chapter is a wake-up call. It makes you sit back, think, and question a lot of stuff you never really bothered to notice before.
